Isolated Mitral Valve Repair/Replacement
Mitral valve operations are most frequently performed through a standard sternotomy or incision of the breast bone. With isolated mitral disease,( i.e., with no associated coronary artery disease or other valvular disease), it is possible to replace or repair the mitral valve through small incisions on the right side of the chest. This is achieved robotically, with the assistance of a robot.
When a mitral valve is not repairable this occurs more rarely , the valve is replaced through a minimally invasive procedure performed through a small 2″ incision below the right breast. As with any minimally invasive, robotic valve procedure , the operation offers benefits such as reduced recovery time, less pain, lower risk of infection, and improved cosmetic results.
As often as possible, mitral valve repair is preferable to replacement. A repair has better results, both early and late. Successful repair carries less risk for the patient, and is more likely to result in a healthy outcome.
Unfortunately, repair is not always possible. Occasionally, mitral valve disease can be so advanced that repair is not an option. In such cases, mitral valve replacement is necessary.
The robotic approach eases and simplifies mitral valve repair. Repair rates for isolated mitral valve leakage done robotically are equally as high as compared to national mitral valve repair rates. These stand at about 60%.
When concomitant tricuspid valve repair is required as well, it can also performed be robotically.
With patients requiring bypass surgery,( in conjunction with MVP/MVR or TV Repair) it is necessary to use the traditional sternotomy/breast bone incision.
